As the summer season draws near the cinemas begin to screen the blockbusters. From the highly anticipated like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and War of the Planet of the Apes to groaners like Transformers: The Last Knight and The Emoji Movie. Who knows, many of these may turn out to be good or bad. Regardless of which one you are looking forward to, here are the top ten films that I am excited to see this summer.
10). Despicable Me 3 (Release Date: June 30)
Having given up his super villain life since the first film, Gru’s past reaches out again in the form of a long lost twin brother while stopping a new foe voiced by South Park creator and Eric Cartman himself Trey Parker. While not an avid watcher of the show I’m familiar enough with its style and sense of humor; to see someone like Parker who has never done anything outside his field like South Park,Team America: World Police, and the Broadway hit The Book of Mormon, I’m very intrigued to see what he delivers in a kid’s movie.
9). The Book of Henry (Release Date: June 16)
If you don’t know who Colin Trevorrow is, he’s a new-coming director who started with a small indie film called Safety Not Guaranteed, followed-up with the blockbuster giant Jurassic World and will direct the final chapter in the new Star Wars saga with Episode IX. For his third film, a very intelligent boy named Henry notices something wrong at the house of his crush involving her father the chief of police. With the help of his younger brother and single mother, the family concocts a plan to get to the bottom of this mystery.
8). Baby Driver (Release Date: June 28)
From Edgar Wright director of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and The World’s End comes a action/crime about a young getaway driver named Baby who with a set of headphones and fine music can handle anything behind the wheel including bank robberies. Wanting to have a better life, his promised “final job,” gets complicated when his personal life and job collide. Another aspect that has me eager is the cast consisting of Ansel Egort from The Fault in Our Stars, Kevin Spacey from House of Cards, Jamie Foxx from Django Unchained, Lily James from Disney’s live-action Cinderella (others may recognize her in Downtown Abbey) Jon Hamm from Mad Men, Jon Bernthal aka Marvel’s The Punisher and Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers rock band. How awesome can you get?!
7). Cars 3 (Release Date: June 16)
As a new generation of racers with better capabilities and advanced technology take over the tracks it puts Lightning McQueen in the position of possibly ending his racing career. “From this moment, everything will change,” that’s what the tagline promises in Cars 3, a sequel that no one was looking forward to after the negative response of Cars 2 until the teaser surfaced online with Lightning McQueen crashing not in cartoony manner but something out of Christopher Nolan movie. Could this be the Cars movie that has a more mature tone than its predecessors with an emphasis on story and less jokes (and Mater)? Pixar has given us great stories with talking toys, monsters in our closets, a love-struck robot, a rat chef, and emotions in our head, a great story with talking cars, I’m open for it.
6). Detroit (Release Date: August 4)
Ever since The Hurt Locker, Kathryn Bigelow has made a name for herself as a high-profile female director in Hollywood and following with another great film Zero Dark Thirty. I can’t think of any other filmmaker to tackle an important story of the Detroit riots that took place in the summer of 1987. The movie will star John Boyega from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, John Krasinki from The Office, Tyler James Williams from Everybody Hates Chris, Anthony Mackie from Captain America: Civil War, and Will Poulter from The Maze Runner.
5). Wonder Woman (Release Date: June 2)
It’ll be the first female superhero film from a female director Patty Jenkins known for her debut film Monster (2003) that earned Charlize Theron an Oscar. Before she met Batfleck, Diane was an Amazon princess who after a soldier washes upon her island she aids him in his fight in the war to end all wars. The DC extended universe hasn’t had a good reputation with Man of Steel, Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice, and Suicide Squad. Being the stellar standout from Batman V. Superman my fingers are crossed that Wonder Woman will be that one good movie from the DCEU.
4). Spider-Man: Homecoming (Release Date: July 7)
Good-bye The Amazing Spider-Man and hello MCU Spider-Man, I never thought I would see a Spider-Man film taking place in the Marvel Universe, this is just a dream come. Like Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Tom Holland as everybody’s favorite web-slinger stole the show in Captain America: Civil War. Following the events after Civil War, we find Peter Parker trying to balance his high school and crime-fighting life but when the Vulture attacks the Big Apple, Spider-Man is on his own to stop this new threat before it’s too late.
3). Captain Underpants: The First Epic Adventure (Release Date: June 2)
I never thought that of all the superhero films coming this year the one that has a crime-fighter who utilizes real briefs and a curtain as a cape would be high on my list. While not a big fan of the series written by Dav Pikley, I won’t deny that I was curious to see what shenanigans every book had to offer. The movie seems to capture the look and spirit of the books and I did find myself laughing throughout the trailer. With DreamWorks’s reputation of pop-culture references and toilet humor (pun intended) in its animated roster, this may come to the movie’s advantage.
2). Mune: Guardian of the Moon (Release Date: TBA)
After being chosen to becoming the guardian of the moon only to mess up and put the world in mortal peril, a faun named Mune goes on a quest to correct his mistake with the help of a pompous sun guardian and a wax-child. From the producers of The Little Prince, comes an animated film from France that was released in 2015 getting a U.S. distribution on a to-be-determined date in the summer. The animation is beautifully reminiscent of James Cameron’s Avatar with the makings of a fantasy epic that I definitely won’t want to miss.
1). Dunkirk (Release Date: July 21)
I know almost nothing about this movie except that it’s a World War II movie directed by Christopher Nolan, one of the greatest directors alive today who brought us The Dark Knight Trilogy, Inception and Interstellar. Need I say more? I don’t even know who the cast is with the exception of four actors: Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, and Cillian Murphy and in an interesting choice Harry Styles from One Direction. I’m taking the Gene Siskel route and avoid all trailers until the premiere, that is how excited I am about this movie and why it’s my most anticipated movie of the summer.
