Valentine Viewing

I was going to do a Fifty Shades Free review but these movies have enough unwanted attention. The rant would have been the same as its predecessor and bears not being repeated. It's common sense why these films are horrible and you don't need me to tell you why. Instead of this tripe, I want to write something that I can recommend for all you lovebirds this Valentine week. I won't pretend to be a guru in romance (sadly still single) but I can think of of a few films that would be great on a date night.

Wall-E (2008)
Underneath the social commentary and environmental message is a sweet love story featuring my favorite on-screen couple. When you've been cleaning a desolate planet for millions of years with a cockroach as your only companion and watching Hello Dolly! every night, wouldn't you yearn for a little love? Wall-E gets his wish when Eve arrives and it is love at first sight. The highlight moment is when they share a a sort of space dance/flight accompanied by Thomas Newman's wonderful score.

Corpse Bride (2005)
Remember when marriage meant something? With the number of divorce rates happening these days, I guess not. Of all movies, Tim Burton's stop-motion Gothic romance illustrates that point. One critic on reviewing Corpse Bride described it best saying “a nice illustration of the principle that we should love the one we are married to, rather than — as our post-Romantic culture would have it — that we should marry the one we have feelings for.”

A Walk to Remember (2002)
If you should ever watch a Nicholas Spark movie, this would be the one. True it has his usual shticks of a couple not liking each but inevitably will and are prevented from being together, but it works in this premise. An even bigger surprise is the positive portrayal of Christianity in Mandy Moore's character; Kirk Cameron and Pureflix wish they could make this movie. It make's a great double feature with The Fault in Our Stars, just have the tissues ready.

Just Like Heaven (2005)
What if The Sixth Sense became a romantic comedy? That may sound like a terrible idea on paper but with Mark Andrews (Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) as director along with Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon as the main leads, it works. Like Corpse Bride, the movie has a man meeting a woman who is among the nonliving and needs his help. It does get a little vulgar among other things but its heart and grace outweigh's the flaws.

Return to Me (2000)
If Just Like Heaven was a little risque for your taste, look no further than with Return to Me; an underappreciated gem that isn't given much attention these days. Directed by Bonnie Hunt, it has that classic Hollywood feel from the golden age but given a contemporary look. David Duchovany is a widowed man who finds love again with a waitress played by Minnie Driver, unaware that she is a heart transplant survivor carrying his deceased wife's heart. Funny, lighthearted and all around charming, it's my favorite romance movie.
