Ron Howard Mini-Reviews

Now that you know my favorite and not-so-favorite movies from Ron Howard, here's a quick rundown on the rest of his work.
Night Shift (1982) C
Nicely made with fine characters but lacks the sincerity of Howard's last film Grand Theft Auto. As problematic his character is, Micheal Keaton steals the show in his first ever role.

Willow (1988) C+
A light fantasy in the league of Dark Crystal, Labyrinth and The Never-Ending Story. Promises action and magic but in small dosages. Couple of characters aren't well established but the fantasy elements while brief are fun.

Parenthood (1989) C-
Well-meaning but shallow look at family life. A nice ensemble with Steve Martin,  hilarious as always, though the film gets hockey on more than one occasion.

The Paper (1994) C
Where Parenthood captured the frenziness of being a parent, The Paper does the same with the newspaper business. The same flaws are found from frizzled characters and conflicts too easily resolved and ending rather abruptly.
Ransom (1995) C+
Unnerving crime thriller that plays to Howard's strengths on delivering suspense in this crime thriller. Seems that much of the script was lost on the cutting room floor but is helped by both Mel Gibson and Gary Sinise's performances.

The Grinch (2000) B-
I still recommend kids to stick with the cartoon but this adult take on the classic Seuss character isn't all that bad. It is a little cynical but works in the world it creates with some of the best jokes that became memes. True some of the content gets tasteless at times but never in the extreme like the disastrous live-action Cat in the Hat movie.

The Missing (2003) B-
On the lines of a dark neo-westerns like Unforgiven, and the 3:10 to Yuma remake. It does get gruesome and dumb on occasion, in an otherwise average movie.
